Facts and Figures

AN EPISCOPAL CHURCH SCHOOL

Founded in 1893 by Bishop James “Steptoe” Johnston, TMI is the oldest Episcopal college preparatory school in the Southwest. TMI welcomes young men and women of all backgrounds to apply. Our day program serves 335 students in grades 6-12; this year 36 students are participating in our boarding program offered for grades 9-12. More than 120 students participate in TMI’s nationally distinguished optional JROTC program. The student to teacher ratio is 9:1 and the average class size is 14. TMI has 44 full-time faculty members, over 50 percent of whom hold advanced degrees. TMI students enjoy 100 percent college placement.

ACCREDITATION

TMI is fully accredited by the Independent Schools Association of the Southwest (ISAS). The school is a member of the National Association of Episcopal Schools (NAES), the Southwestern Association of Episcopal Schools (SAES), as well as the Association of Military College and Schools of the United States, and the Southwest Preparatory Conference (SPC).

UPPER SCHOOL CURRICULUM

TMI offers a college preparatory program for all its students.

SELECTION FOR HONORS AND AP COURSES

Students must petition to be in Honors or AP courses. They are required to submit an application, which often includes submitting an essay or a piece of work related to the subject, and secure a recommendation from their current teacher in the subject area. Teachers review the applications to ensure that students are offered equal to or a bit above their demonstrated ability.

ATHLETICS

TMI competes athletically in the Southwest Preparatory Conference in cross country, football, volleyball, basketball, soccer, swimming, golf, lacrosse, and tennis.

ACTIVITIES

The faculty sponsors the National Honor Society, the Student Council, the Honor Council, the Environmental Explorers Club, the Community Service Corps, and Christian Fellowship.

ADVANCED PLACEMENT:

In the spring of 2007, 62 students took 109 Advanced Placement exams in 15 different subject areas. Advanced Placement exams are graded on a 5-point scale with scores of 1 and 2 being non-qualifying scores, scores of 3 and above being qualifying scores (eligible to qualify for college credit depending on that student’s attending college’s policy), and scores of 4 and 5 qualify for college credit at most colleges or universities that grant Advanced Placement College credit. 81% of all scores of TMI students were qualifying scores of 3 or above and an impressive 60% of all scores were either 4s or 5s. Most impressive were the AP Modern European History scores: all the students earned qualifying scores and 62.5% of the students scored 5s. Additionally, it is worth noting that TMI offered three new AP classes, AP Latin: Vergil, AP Government, and AP Computer Science.

We have expanded the AP Government class from just one semester to the entire year in 2007 – 2008. We will be adding an AP Calculus BC class this coming year and work is underway to develop AP Latin: Catullus and Ovid (will be offered in 2008 – 2009), AP Spanish Literature, and AP Economics.

GRADING, RANKING, AND GPA

Numerical marks are used, with 60 as the minimum passing grade and minimum mark for college recommendations. It is the policy of TMI not to rank its students. In figuring the student’s GPA, all courses are taken into account. In addition, a weighted GPA is determined using the scales below:

For Honors: A+3 B+2 C+1
For Advanced Placement: A+5 B+4 C+3
SAT Scores Mid 50% Range of Scores Verbal Math Writing
Class of 2003 – (43 Students) 540-680 530-650 N/A
